James Gaffigan dirigiert Korngold, Williams und Prokofjew
In the organizer's words:
In the 1930s, many a European composer set sail for the safer haven of America. One of them was Erich Wolfgang Korngold, who—following his great successes as an opera composer—went on to shape the film music of an entire generation in his new home, Hollywood. Heroic and elegant, his “Sea Hawk” Overture—with its piercing wind fanfares and sweeping romantic phrases—brings the adventure films of the 1940s into the concert hall. In John Williams’s work, the sound of the French horn invites listeners to dream themselves back to the past. Performed by the Munich Philharmonic’s principal horn player, Matías Piñeira, the horn evokes memories of military conflicts and hunting scenes—as well as idyllic, pastoral landscapes. Arguably the world’s most famous lovers live on in numerous works of the musical canon. Thanks to its inspired melodies and great rhythmic power, Sergei Prokofiev’s version of “Romeo and Juliet” ranks among the highlights of his musical oeuvre. In his concert, American conductor James Gaffigan presents a specially curated selection from Prokofiev’s famous ballet.
