The dance performance JANANGA is rooted in African history and is aimed at a global audience. It explores how clothing reflects the human experience of tradition, cultural influence, spiritual resistance, conformity and socio-political change across cultures and eras. The term "Jananga" has historical significance: it was once used to describe colonial conformists, Jonanga (plural), who were seen as traitors to traditional African values because they had adopted the European style of dress. The dance performance revisits and redefines the term, using it as a lens to examine global narratives around identity and the politics of appearance.
