Bruckner's work is entirely imbued with the musical symbols of sacred power: sweeping chorale-like themes, fervent and spacious climaxes that seem to transform the concert hall into a cathedral. The Fifth Symphony in particular, whose original version was not heard until more than three decades after Bruckner's death, lives up to this reputation. It was called the "Catholic" or "Faith Symphony." It is all the more interesting when conductor Marek Janowski takes on Bruckner's Fifth: He has always appreciated the great Romantic above all as an architect - according to the motto: structure instead of incense.
