JAZZ SOMMER: SIRIUS QUARTET FEAT. JOO KRAUS

The Sirius Quartet from New York and trumpeter Joo Kraus met for the first time at his “Herzstücke” series, for which Kraus regularly hosts events at Café Animo in Ulm. The Südwest Presse described what followed as “stellar sounds from New York”: an evening whose echoes linger to this day. In the conventional understanding of musical harmony, a classical string quartet meeting a jazz trumpeter is not something one would expect. But the Sirius Quartet is no ordinary string quartet. Gregor Huebner, Fung Chern Hwei, Ron Lawrence, and Jeremy Harman are all classically trained and, at the same time, outstanding improvisers and composers. Since its debut concert at New York’s “Knitting Factory,” the Sirius Quartet has been perhaps the only string quartet to perform primarily its own compositions or world premieres by living composers—and one that doesn’t shy away from free improvisation. Joo Kraus is also at home in many styles. He played in the Krautrock band Kraan as well as with bassist Hellmuth Hattler in the internationally successful acid jazz duo Tab Two, at the Jazzkantine, with DePhazz, with Soullounge, and with Klaus Doldinger’s Passport. Together, Kraus and the Sirius Quartet break the boundaries of their instruments’ conventional vocabulary and create a new, gripping sound.
