We play compositions by Eric Dolphy three days after what would have been his 97th birthday. As one of the unique and creative players of his time-from the late '50s to the mid-'60s-our goal is to have fun with the tunes and explore the spirit and distinct logic of one of Black music's most insistent artists.
Eric Dolphy was a warm hearted, generous, explorative, humble yet visionary musician. As a teen Dolphy practiced alongside birds in his back yard in California, after picking up a variety of wind instruments. His unique playing style found home in the bands of Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Abbey Lincoln and George Russell. Dolphy died of a diabetic shock in West-Berlin in 1964, at the age of 36, being misdiagnosed with a drug-overdose and put aside by doctors.
