Jens Lekman happens to be a wedding singer. But he's not there for no reason. Since his song "If You Ever Need a Stranger (To Sing at Your Wedding)" from 2004, he has had a side job: accepting requests from strangers to sing at their weddings. For over twenty years, he has had a special perspective on the role love songs can play in our lives. In 2020, together with the writer David Levithan, he conceived a novel with music: "Songs from Other People's Weddings". Originally, this album was to contain the songs from the weddings in the book, but as the novel took shape, Lekman began to imagine what would happen between the chapters of the book. The book and album eventually intertwined, but also found their own paths. The book maintained the structure of the story, but the album sometimes crept behind the scenes. Stories from the songs found their way into the book and vice versa. The result is an exploration of the themes we sing about when we sing about love - euphoria, doubt, confusion, tenderness, conflict, playfulness, gratitude, ingratitude, longing, belonging, questions, answers. It is primarily about relationships and how they are reflected in the relationships and weddings of others, but above all it is a love song for love songs.
