Jenůfa is pregnant. Her lover, the child’s father Števa, wants nothing more to do with her. Jenůfa is desperate and, in her distress, finally confides in her stepmother. The stepmother fears for her foster daughter’s reputation and makes a fateful decision… Between narrow-minded morality and breathtaking powerlessness, Janáček’s opera explores the fates of two women.
