JIM AVIGNON aka NEOANGIN / Konzert und Ausstellung
In the organizer's words:
Jim Avignon, also known as Neoangin
Jim Avignon
is considered one of the most unconventional figures in the German art scene.
He paints at a breakneck pace and has long kept the art establishment at bay with his vibrant colors, biting wit, and dizzying output.
His paintings blend humor, pop art, and social criticism—and he deliberately aims to make his art accessible to as many people as possible.
That’s why he has long avoided collaborating with galleries and has instead exhibited his paintings in venues such as clubs.
Neonangin
His music is as sketch-like as his life:
The story of the music project began in the 1990s when he found a one-man-show keyboard at the checkout counter of a home improvement store.
Since then, he’s also been musically active, releasing albums—with covers he designed himself—at wonderfully irregular intervals as the subversive lo-fi electro project “Neoangin.”
These albums defy all trends, embody DIY charm at its best, and are, in a way, a good-natured “Fuck you” to the music business.
Over the past 25 years, he has self-released 18 albums, largely without a label, and usually organizes his own gigs and tours.
Now Neoangin (aka Jim Avignon) is back with new shows and a new album.
“forever coming of age”—the title of the new record—is, if you will, a concept album that explores the deep longing for eternal youth.
“Coming of age” describes a person’s development from childhood to adulthood (according to Wikipedia) and is a genre frequently explored in films and novels.
Avignon, too, is occasionally overcome by the feeling that he has never truly left his teenage years behind, yet at the same time can already see the end in the distance.
He sets this dilemma—as a way of life—to music in his typically personal songs, which these days often take a political turn.
Especially with “still in love with a world that destroys itself,” he captures the prevailing mood of the times with unsettling accuracy.
Jim remains a hopeless optimist, even as the world goes to hell.
Neoangin experimented early on with distilling electronic sounds and singer-songwriting into a sound all their own, and on “forever coming of age” they’re once again at the top of their game. His trademark is an ambivalence between euphoria and melancholy—a rarity in the music world—that gives the Neoangin sound that certain something—
a sound that immediately takes you on a journey.
You get the best impression, however, when you experience Neoangin on stage: the live shows are excellent entertainment—sound, stage sets, masks, and absurd ideas.
Jim’s dance moves are also inimitable—going from party to crisis to euphoria to madness to grief to “Ciao” in two minutes—excellent entertainment beyond any known genre.
In short: Neoangin is everything that everyday life no longer really allows.
Neoangin is the child that lies within each of us.
On September 11, he’ll be at the Slow Club, where he’ll exhibit his artwork and perform music for one night—we’re looking forward to it!
