Joanna Duda Trio "Fumitsuke"
(PL)
Polish keyboardist Joanna Duda has an extraordinary talent for improvisation: Detached from categorizations, she effortlessly jumps back and forth between post-bop, contemporary music, soundtracks and ambient - and shows no interest in restricting herself to one direction, nor limiting the soundscapes that spring from her imagination. Duda's career to date has been shaped by this free spirit more than anything else. And yet it is hard to deny that she feels particularly at home in the post-bop tradition, for example in her role as a band musician alongside bassist Wojtek Mazolewski. On Mazolewski's current album, "Spirit to All," Duda shines both in her imaginative solos and in the way she helps shape the action in the background.
The duo she comes to Berlin with - bassist Ksawery Wójciński and drummer Michał Bryndal - brings out the full range of her abilities. After all, her acclaimed 2021 album "Fumitsuke" contains a whole cornucopia of musical ideas fed by the keyboardist's restless creativity. From elastic grooves to ambient sounds and intertwined contrapuntal passages to expansive swing stretches, the band knows how to convince, while Duda adds keyboards and synthesizers to her piano playing, making her sound palette sound even broader.
