Johannes Enders Trio feat. Gene Calderazzo: Tribute to Pharaoh Sanders

Johannes Enders will celebrate a tribute to jazz legend Pharoah Sanders with this trio.

Johannes Enders is one of the most experienced and experimental jazz musicians in his field far beyond the borders of Germany. The tenor saxophonist from Weilheim, who studied in Munich, Graz and New York, is a bustling creative spirit whose immense artistic output is full of surprises. He has been awarded numerous prizes in recent years, including the Cultural Promotion Prize of the City of Munich, the SWR Jazz Prize, the New German Jazz Prize and the German Music Writer's Prize.

The tribute trio celebrates the jazz legend Pharoah Sanders, who died in 2022 and left behind several milestones, particularly in free jazz and spiritual jazz. In the 1960s, he played an important role as a member of John Coltrane's ensemble, one of the most influential saxophonists in the history of jazz. His albums Karma and Thembi are known for their spiritual and avant-garde approach. His best-known work, included on Karma from the late 60s, is the original 32-minute recording of "The Creator has a Master Plan".

In addition to bassist Joris Teepe, who has been musically active for over 30 years and is known for his collaborations with Rashied Ali and Benny Golson, among others, US drummer Gene Calderazzo is the third member of the trio (instead of the originally announced drummer Billy Hart, who unfortunately had to cancel his participation in the tour). Calderazzo has also played regularly as a permanent band member with Pharoah Sanders, especially in recent years.
