Chalid, the Caliph of Baghdad, and his loyal Grand Vizier Mansor are bored.
A flying merchant comes just in time, offering all sorts of interesting and curious things for sale. They buy a magic powder from him, the effects of which the merchant himself does not know, as the effects of the powder are described in Latin.
Mansor, however, knows Latin and reads that you can use the powder to transform yourself into any animal and even understand its language. To do this, you have to bow to the east and say "Mutabor", and the same applies if you want to become a human again.
However, you must never laugh during the transformation. But that's exactly what they do when they transform into storks and overhear two other storks.
When they try to change back again, it doesn't work and they have to remain storks. The new caliph is soon celebrated in the palace - it is the evil sorcerer Kaschnur, who also sold them the powder disguised as a merchant. In their search for a solution, Chalid and Mansor meet an owl who is herself enchanted and is actually a princess. Together, the three of them could outwit the wizard, but the owl sets a difficult condition.
