The Heimspiel film series is showing the debut film "Gecenin Kıyısı" by KHM graduate Türker Süer. The feature film celebrated its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2024 and was released in cinemas in March of this year.
Sinan, a young lieutenant in the Turkish army, is given the task of extraditing his brother Kenan to a military court. Burdened by the tragic death of their father, both brothers embark on a journey through a country characterized by political unrest. As they come to terms with their attitudes, Sinan's convictions are put to the ultimate test on the night of the coup. In a country where the state demands absolute loyalty, the brothers must decide whether they are willing to make the sacrifices that their duty and conscience demand.
"The story may take place in Türkiye, but the questions asked are truly universal in my view and can be applied to any society: How do I act within an increasingly authoritarian system that stifles differing views on life? It's about the impossibility to be oneself. In this way, the story reflects current global trends of polarization and uncertainty in personal relationships. EDGE OF NIGHT tells the story of a man ordered to lead his own brother to his doom, and how they both deal with it. It is the story of a journey of two human beings, both lost, reflected in the changing landscapes of Türkiye. The two brothers, with all their differences, as well as the rest of the characters, convey a complex picture of society - a society on the verge of losing its humanity."
