Julia and Georg, both in their forties, long for a child. So far, all their efforts have been unsuccessful. But the charismatic Dr. Vilfort gives them hope, and the innovative treatment at his clinic is indeed successful - Julia becomes pregnant. But after the birth, the baby is immediately taken away. When the new mother finally holds her newborn in her arms the following day, she feels strangely distant. Why is the baby so quiet and apathetic? Something is not right here.
