After Alfred Jarry

With "King Ubu" Alfred Jarry created in 1896 a mythical figure in a world of grotesque archetypal images. Ubu is the epitome of the bourgeois, the embodiment of moral depravity, the vulgar tyrant possessed by base instincts and a supreme lust for power.

The play's scandalous success was based primarily on the fact that Jarry dispensed with traditional plot devices and used obscene language. But how can one deal with this today, in a world that already seems like satire itself?

Charlotte Sprenger and her ensemble headline Jarry's play (itself a pastiche of literary set pieces) with a mash-up of scenes and fantasies from our Federal Republic present, in search of the "true Ubu."
