Konzert: Love God Chaos (Alternative-/Indie-/Art-Rock)
In the organizer's words:
Welcome to the “Augendisko”! Love God Chaos celebrate life and are releasing an album that’s a kravoller mix of words and sound, irony and seriousness, provocation and poetry.
Love God Chaos is known as a band that writes “unusual, highly infectious songs with poetic lyrics” (GUITAR – Kurier), that“pulls off clever prog rock/indie pop moves,” and musically “celebrates the wickedly abstract” (Julian Melichar – Kleine Zeitung). Three years after “Wir leuchten im Dunkeln,” the band invites listeners to dance in “Augendisko.”
What’s the story behind this “Augendisko”? An image immediately springs to mind: sparkling, shimmering, glowing—somehow special. And it fits perfectly. Yet the inspiration for “Augendisko” was relatively mundane. Marcus Heider (the band’s frontman, under his alter ego “John Krempl”) was forced to undergo several eye surgeries after the release of their last album. In itself, a naturally unpleasant experience, but ultimately also a strange and almost otherworldly one. How do you describe the flickering and the colors dancing before your eyes when you’re lying on the operating table in a daze? Right, “Augendisko” captures it best. The “Augendisko,” which gives the album its title, is a place of longing—bizarre, colorful, and as diverse as the music itself. And we’ve now also unraveled the mystery surrounding John Krempl’s eye patch. It’s not a fashion accessory, but a necessity for real-life screen work—and thus a welcome part of the stage outfit.
The band made its debut in 2014 with their first album , “Wo das Meer am tiefsten ist.” The press described the album as “carefree, danceable, dreamy, playful, epic, experimental, wild” (hp://www.lovegodchaos.at/presse). Love God Chaos performed concerts in Austria and Germany and released a total of six atmospheric black-and-white videos for the songs from their first album at irregular intervals (hp://bit.ly/1OwlgIC).
“Die Unmöglichkeit des Nichtscheiterns” (2017)is the powerful, clever, and “seductive” follow-up—not the “difficult” second album. The video for “Eskalation, bitte” (hps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Chbko1MGJgk), female musicians from 20 Styrian bands they’re friends with make an appearance. Genre boundaries cease to exist for the duration of a song; the spirit of solidarity within the local band scene is and remains unique.
In 2019, the third album, “Endling,” followed, with the epic opener “Commander” setting the tone. The video shot for the song was celebrated by the media and won the award for Best Rock Music Video at the 2021 Munich Music Video Awards. After some promising early live performances, they—like everyone else—are stunned to discover that something like a “lockdown” could actually happen and that the world has come to a standstill. After a moment of shock, they decide on the only right course of action: to keep going.
The press notes that with “Wir leuchten im Dunkeln” (2022 ), the band pulls off clever prog-rock/indie-pop twists. Musically, according to the “Kleine Zeitung,” they celebrate the wickedly abstract and don’t shy away from grand gestures. Meanwhile, Love God Chaos is making the rounds at various festivals and is being hailed as the only German-language art-rock discovery.
Marcus Heider, aka John Krempl, is the composer and writer of Love God Chaos’s songs. “Krempl” stands for things you carry with you, love, and are reluctant to part with; since 2007, John Krempl has been Marcus Heider’s virtual alter ego. He was formerly a member of the indie rock legends “The Trainleaders” and “Spuk.” Since 2000, he has been an improvisational musician at “Theater im Bahnhof” in Graz
