Lebendige Bilder. Buddhistische Rituale in der Kunst Chinas, Japans und Koreas

In the organizer's words:

The exhibition is dedicated to the ritual use of works of art and highlights some of the most important ceremonies for the East Asian cultural sphere. Religious practice in Buddhism, as in other religions, is characterized by rituals that are performed at different times and for different purposes by monks, nuns and lay people. Certain holidays play a major role in the Buddhist year, for example celebrating the birth or death of the religion's founder, the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, as well as fasting festivals, temple foundations and seasonal rituals. The focus is on cult images of various Buddhas, Bodhisattvas (enlightened beings who help living beings in this world), important monks or patriarchs. Ritual cult objects such as powerful sceptres (skt. vajra), bells and incense burners, which were used in the ceremonies, are also on display.
