She's a lesbian. She's in space. She's a princess. And she's also very sad.
Saira is a princess from the planet Klitopolis, a safe bubble in outer space where only lesbians live. But while everything seems easy for her parental queen and queen, Saira can't summon her Labrys, the sign of her royal heritage. The pressure mounts when her ex-girlfriend Kiki is also kidnapped by the Straight White Maliens. As ransom, the Straight White Maliens demand the very Labrys that Saira still does not possess. Contrary to her introverted instincts, Saira sets off on a dangerous journey through space. Because maybe Kiki will want her back as a friend?
Lesbian Space Princess is a refreshing animated film about a world in which queerness has become the norm. A wonderful story develops about the path to self-love through coming to terms with traumatic childhood experiences. But with constant sideswipes at currently prevailing discourses, the main thing that remains is a smile. Lesbian Space Princess was therefore quite rightly awarded the Teddy, the Berlinale's prize for queer cinema, in 2025.
