At the “First International Writers’ Congress for the Defense of Culture,” held from June 21 to 25, 1935, more than 80 speakers took the floor and engaged in debates that were at times heated. Among the participants were figures such as André Malraux, André Gide, André Breton, Tristan Tzara, Louis Aragon, Aldous Huxley, Edward Morgan Forster, and German-speaking writers such as Bertolt Brecht, Ernst Bloch, Heinrich Mann, Ernst Toller, Anna Seghers, Robert Musil, Gustav Regler, and Egon Erwin Kisch. The writer Luna Ali has compiled a small selection of various speeches, which Çiğdem Teke will recite. This serves as a starting point for the subsequent conversation between Paula Fürstenberg and Dmitrij Kapitelman: What would they speak about if they were to give a speech at a “Writers’ Congress in Defense of Culture”?
