They vote Republican, speak only Russian, and worship Putin. These are the common stereotypes about the roughly 2.5 million Russian-Germans in Germany. But while many clichés circulate, there is often a lack of deeper understanding of their complex history and empathy for the realities of their lives.

Russian-German journalist Ira Peter, who moved with her family from Kazakhstan to Germany at the age of nine, takes us on a personal and societal journey of discovery. She recounts the shame she felt about her Soviet migration history, the feeling of being unwelcome in Germany, and the devastating consequences of a failed integration policy.

The book poses questions that cut to the core: How much adaptation is required to be considered “German enough” in Germany? What fears and traumas from emigration continue to have an impact to this day? And how do today’s generations view identity and belonging?

Ira Peter, born in Kazakhstanin 1983 and living in Germany since 1992, studied literature and psychology. After many years working as a PR and marketing consultant for corporations and agencies, she now works as a freelance journalist based in Mannheim (for ZEIT online, taz, SWR, among others). Since 2017, she has been highlighting topics related to Russian-Germans in the media and cultural projects, and in 2021 she served as city writer in Odessa.
