The book became a bestseller, was longlisted for the German Book Prize, and established Elena Fischer as one of the most exciting new voices in German-language literature.

Now her second novel is here: *Cast a Shadow*.

Christmas Eve 1963. Joseph has been living alone on his farm ever since his wife, Lis, left him and moved to the city with their son. But then, suddenly, twenty-year-old Birdie appears at his door—weakened and on the run from her family. And there’s Ada, Lis’s older sister, with whom Joseph has always had a special connection.

Elena Fischer

Elena Fischer, born in 1987, studied comparative literature and film studies in Mainz, where she lives with her family. Her debut novel, *Paradise Garden*, was published in 2023, was nominated for the Harbour-Front Literature Festival’s Debut Prize, and has since been translated into 15 languages.
