Since the end of 2018, in Germany we have the person status 'diverse' in addition to 'male' and 'female'. Transgender diagnoses and treatments have multiplied in specialty sexual health clinics worldwide. In the context of self-determination laws, we are debating whether people should be able to determine their legal gender through self-expression.
Our data, rights, and spaces differentiate by gender. If the definition of 'man' and 'woman' changes fundamentally, it will have consequences for all aspects of our lives that are organized by gender. Why do we collect data on gender at all, and what do we need it for?
