LESUNG UND PERFORMANCE MADAME NIELSEN »DAS ZEITGEISTERHAUS« MIT MADAME NIELSEN UND DANIEL BREITFELDER
In the organizer's words:
A novel about “thequestion of how much art and artistry the average person can handle—and whether Munich can tolerate a crazy Danish woman”(SZ)
An artist “from the far, foreign north” is invited to Germany to stage her show at a “venerable Gesamtkunsthaus.” What begins as a promising artistic collaboration quickly turns into a cultural clash. The prominent artist does exactly what is forbidden in this country of ours—and promptly, the offended zeitgeist makes itself heard. In the end, she is forced to leave the venue. The “offender” tries to understand how things could have come to this, and what's actually happening here—in this venue, in this country, in this story, at this time.
The autofictional narrative becomes a polyphonic reflection on cultural practices that critique power and the tragedy of those who are determined to do the right thing—and precisely because of that, keep repeating the wrong thing over and over again.
Madame Nielsen is a Danish author, artist, musician, and performer. She has received numerous awards for her artistic work, which includes not only prose but also plays, songs, and performances. In 2024, she was awarded the Wolfgang Köppen Literature Prize upon the recommendation of Christian Kracht. She has been our guest here on the Rhine several times, presenting her novels *Der endlose Sommer * and *Lamento* as well as her performance *Die führende Madame *. She has won over an enthusiastic fan base at Brotfabrik, Buchhandlung Böttger, Theater, and Literaturhaus Bonn.
