LIZ RECH / CAMISSA CREATE (Not A) Common Ground / If The Bones Could Speak

In the organizer's words:
This performative walk invites the public to discover Hamburg's Baakenhafen as an important post-colonial memorial site: a two-hour tour leads to various installations and performances that, on the one hand, deal with Baakenhafen as a place from which the so-called German "Schutztruppen" were sent off in 1904-1907 to set off for Namibia, where they carried out the genocide against the Herero and Nama. At the same time, the project addresses the handling of human remains from the colonial era that are still stored in European institutions today. The project is a collaboration between the collective Camissa Create, led by Luke de Kock from southern Africa, which specializes in cultural heritage, historical narratives and site-specific works, and the Hamburg-based artist Liz Rech, who works at the intersection of performance, installation and activism. Together with many other artists and as part of the series "Gegen-Denkmäler" by Stadtkuratorin Hamburg, Rech and Camissa Create interrogate Hamburg's urban memory and open up a space of uneasy common ground(s). The project will be framed by an artist talk on August 14 and a discussion on anarchivist practices on August 16 at the MARKK Museum am Rothenbaum - Kulturen und Künste der Welt.
