Pankaj Tiwari embarks on a personal and political search for clues: the Amsterdam-based theatre-maker, who landed a worldwide festival hit with his last work PAPERPLANES, grew up in an Indian farming family and explores the sustainable farming methods of his childhood and their disappearance over the past thirty years in his new work THE HARVEST OF BROKEN PROMISES. The play takes us to India in the 1990s, when the opening of the neoliberal market fundamentally changed agriculture and the realities of life. Multinational corporations such as Monsanto and their genetically modified seeds became a symbol of industrialized agriculture, the consequences of which continue to shape rural economies and ecological futures to this day. Tiwari conducted interviews with farmers worldwide and interweaves video work, performance and folklore to create a multi-layered reflection between the promise of progress and the loss of knowledge, global markets and local ways of life. In doing so, he not only builds traditional clay jugs on stage, but also reveals complex interdependencies and makes their contradictions tangible: while the longing for "authentic" agriculture is growing in Europe, it has long since been destroyed elsewhere. The result is a poetically intimate evening of theater about memory, responsibility and the question of what this means for the future.
