As the son of a miner in the Ruhr area, twelve-year-old Julian experiences the post-war economic miracle at first hand. While his peers spend their time drinking beer, smoking and engaging in obscenities, Julian looks after his family. One day he gets a camera from his neighbor, Mr. Gorny, with which he observes his surroundings very closely - especially the precocious and permissive neighbor's daughter Marusha. But Julian's summertime infatuation soon ends in disaster.
