Indie Radar Ruhr & Corner-Company present: LOKI x Dolphin Love
First there is a synth. Quietly, slowly, it pumps itself up, like a heartbeat in a sprint on the way to the jump. Then suddenly: guitar, drums, bass. So many emotions flowing together, glued together by these vocals, restrained and yet determined. Delicate but at the same time rough and distorted. He tells vivid stories of feelings that have never been told: Loneliness, forlornness and - of course - love.
If there's one thing LOKI can do, it's write songs about open wounds, music as a band-aid, great melodies as a small consolation. This is already clear in the chorus of their debut "The Girl With No Eyes", when singer Marc Grünhäuser sings: "Oh she was standing there/ blindfolded on the eye/ oh she was standing there/ and it was love the first sight". The song has almost a million streams on Spotify alone. "Rightly so", you want to shout! Because although LOKI are still considered newcomers, it all sounds so clever, so mature, so completely without apropos. A lot has happened in the last four years: The three EPs "The Tales of Antheon the Rabbit", "Intimacy" and "Cycles" have earned LOKI comparisons to artists such as Bon Iver or Apparat. With an award at the popNRW Prize 2020 in their luggage, LOKI became an eight-piece band: with strings, wind instruments and polyphonic vocals. This was followed by appearances at c/o Pop, the Reeperbahn Festival and two tours of Germany.
Now the fourth EP is due to be released in 2023. Six tracks that swing like a pendulum between dance and heartache, between folk and electronic sound, between Fleetwood Mac and Ben Howard. Driving rhythms slide over soundscapes, dissolving into choruses reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen at his best, catchy and full of genuine emotion at the same time. This is great. You want to cry, you want to move the next second. And above all, you don't want to stop listening to this band.
