WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
"When great emotions cannot be expressed honestly, they explode with the force of an atomic bomb" (Barbara Wysocka). Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor - Romeo and Juliet in the Scottish Lowlands, so to speak - is by no means a private love tragedy, but an eminently political story that demonstrates how a system of power deforms and ultimately corrodes human relationships to the core. Donizetti has lent his most haunting music to the rebellion and extinction of betrayed love: The revenge is bloody, the madness deadly. And the abused feelings - says the director - "destroy everything and everyone".
