A DECLARATION OF LOVE FEATURING PEOPLE FROM HEIDELBERG, BASED ON THE BOOK BY TAHSIM DURGUN

THEATER·WORLD PREMIERE

With humor, empathy, and poetry, internet star Tahsim Durgun recounts the realities of life in post-migrant communities in his book. “Mama, Please Learn German” is a declaration of love to his own mother and a reckoning with German bureaucracy and the education system.

Director Bassam Ghazi, winner of the German theater award DER FAUST 2024, weaves Tahsim Durgun’s text with the personal experiences of people who themselves have an international family history. The result is an uplifting evening of theater about mother tongues and foreign languages—and about the silent struggles of people whose voices often go unheard.

An important part of the work at Theater & Orchester Heidelberg will be created in collaboration with the city in the future. In participatory productions, people from Heidelberg and the surrounding area take the stage. They bring their own stories and perspectives—and turn the theater into a place of exchange and collaborative creation.
