Martha Bijlsma & Flex Ensemble - Jonas Urbat (Live-Elektronik) Kammermusik, Pop & Electronica
In the organizer's words:
Inside Eroica - the musicians around Fellowship artist Martha Bijlsma want to bring to life just how revolutionary Beethoven's "Eroica" actually was: with modern instrumental and electronic accompaniment.
Beethoven's revolutionary third symphony virtually overwhelmed audiences in 1804 with its form-blasting energy. Cellist Martha Bijlsma aims to recreate this experience with her piano quartet. For the Beethoven Year 2020, the Flex Ensemble released a highly acclaimed album with a re-contextualized "Eroica". As a Fellowship Artist at this year's Beethovenfest, Bijlsma is bringing the CD project to the stage.
The ensemble has commissioned a prelude and a postlude to the symphony from the Canadian composer Gordon Williamson. He translates Beethoven's motifs into a contemporary sound with a beaten bow stick and plucked strings. The artists play the symphony itself in the quartet arrangement by Ferdinand Ries, Beethoven's Bonn friend and piano pupil. They want to "get as close as possible to the essence of this music" - everything here sounds lively, direct and uncompromising. Jonas Urbat lets this intoxicating power flow into electronic soundscapes.
