MEDEA: Mother of the Void

We are now at the point where the legend of Medea reaches its tragic climax. Medea - mother, outcast, stranger - will kill her own children in order to take revenge on her husband. Iason, the husband and father of her children, turns his back on her in order to gain power and kingship by marrying a younger woman. Medea is left behind: betrayed, humiliated and uprooted. Pain, anger and despair give rise to a plan of unimaginable cruelty.

Based on Euripides' dramatic model, the legend of Medea is viewed differently, questioned and retold. Personal and intimate perspectives dissolve the one-dimensional idea of the mad woman and open up a view of a person who was loved for too long, lost too much and trampled on far too often. Not to excuse her actions, but to make them understandable.

No pity. Not to look down on them. But compassion. No excuses. Not an acquittal. But an attempt to understand. No glorification. No idealization. But recognition of their tragedy.
