An Italian Faust Tale as a Spectacle with a Powerful Chorus
It all begins with a wager between God and Mephistopheles; the stake is Faust—or, more precisely, his soul. But Faust, too, has ambitions. He wants to overcome God, to be eternally young and all-knowing, and in doing so becomes the unwitting pawn of greater powers. Arrigo Boito adapted Goethe’s “Faust” and wove together powerful choruses and ethereal sounds into a musical theater spectacle at the center of which the devil wreaks his (mis)deeds.
