Mehr Frauen! Bremer Künstlerinnen auf Papier

Paula Modersohn-Becker is world-renowned today. But who knows her fellow artists, who were also active in Bremen’s art scene during the first half of the 20th century: Clara Rilke-Westhoff, Marie Bock, Anna Plate, Margarethe von Reinken, Agnes Sander-Plump, Dora Bromberger, Elisabeth Noltenius, Gustava Tölken, or Olga Bontjes van Beek?
As part of a research project, the Kunsthalle Bremen has taken a closer look at its collection of drawings by Bremen-based artists and made a remarkable discovery: Compared to the Kunsthalle Bremen’s overall collection, which is dominated by male artists, the Kupferstichkabinett holds a disproportionately large number of drawings by female artists from Bremen: delicate pencil drawings, flowing watercolors, and energetic charcoal sketches. A selection of 60 works is presented in the exhibition.
Systematically held back, the female artists fought back through networking. Until 1919, women were not allowed to study at state art academies, so their educational opportunities were severely limited. The women artists from Bremen founded the Bremen Association of Women Painters in 1899 or, beginning in 1928, joined the “Association of German and Austrian Women Artists and Art Lovers” (GEDOK).
The exhibition *More Women! Bremen Women Artists on Paper*tracesthe connections between the women artists, their roots in Bremen, and the surrounding region: in the towns of Worpswede, Fischerhude, and Dötlingen, women and men artists lived side by side. There, they taught the next generation to paint and draw—deliberately setting themselves apart from the academies. Artistic dynasties emerged, such as the Modersohn, Plump, and Breling families. Ultimately, the acquaintances made in these artistic communities and through GEDOK grew into deep friendships.
