Turkish singer, songwriter and composer Melike Şahin is well on her way to becoming one of the most important voices of her generation: She had already achieved international fame as the lead singer of the legendary Turkish psychedelic band BaBa ZuLa. Since her debut album Merhem (2021), which has been streamed billions of times worldwide, she has undoubtedly been a superstar - and a diva in the best sense of the word. With her upcoming second album AKKOR, Melike Şahin wants to make her music accessible to an even wider audience. In doing so, she remains true to her musical roots: the sounds of Anatolian pop and folk music, which shaped her from an early age, flow into her unmistakable blend of nostalgia and contemporary style. For her equally emotional and powerful vocals, she is celebrated by fans as the "queen of melancholy" - even if some of the funkier tracks on AKKOR skillfully break with this image. And Melike Şahin also breaks with expectations in terms of content: Her music is more than just an homage to the past, her lyrics tackle current social issues and stand up for the rights of women, children and marginalized groups. Şahin does not want to explicitly describe herself as an activist, but her art has become the mouthpiece of the women's movement in Turkey. Her songs are driven by resistance to censorship and oppression and always find ways to express solidarity and a fighting spirit. With AKKOR, Şahin also shows a new side to herself in this respect: "My first album was about healing, this one is about survival," she says. The record, recorded live in London, combines disco vibes with psychedelic and Anatolian folk sounds, all carried by her haunting voice. Backed by a talented international team of musicians, including Sterling Campbell and Dave Okumu, Şahin created a sonic experience that reflects her extraordinary artistic development. In 2024, Melike Şahin takes AKKOR on tour around the world. With shows that send a message of strength and survival - like a phoenix that rises again and again.
