MELT-BANANA ...from Tokyo/Japan
Noise Industrial Rock
MELT-BANANA come from Tokyo/Japan. The intense sound of MELT-BANANA has long been an institution - for fans, critics and musicians alike who are not deterred by complex structures and arrangements. Numerous singles and sampler contributions, 12½ albums and concerts all over the world: with their hard, experimental and unique sound, MELT-BANANA have become an integral part of music history.
It is therefore no surprise that many of MELT-BANANA's fans are musicians themselves who recognize and appreciate the complexity and high level of MxBx. Nor is it a coincidence that artists such as JOHN ZORN, TOOL, MIKE PATTON, FANTOMAS, WIRE, UNDERWORLD, MELVINS or LOU REED, who sadly passed away far too early, have worked with them. MELT-BANANA consists of singer Yasuko Onuki ("Yako") and guitarist Ichiro Agata ("Agata") . Agata's guitar sound is often described as a mix of turntables, synthesizers and samplers hidden between six guitar strings - creating that unmistakable "hypertension sound".
MELT-BANANA concerts leave lasting impressions: likeable musicians, a magical atmosphere, enormous volume, surprising effects within the songs and an almost perfect handling of their instruments. Grindcore riffs, charged with unexpected effects, sharp shouts and massive pressure. Within seconds you think of art, noise, punk, metal, riot grrrl, grindcore, pop culture or the soundtrack of an exciting movie. Are MELT-BANANA a noise band? A punk band? Techno-pop? This question is ultimately irrelevant - because MELT-BANANA cannot be categorized. The band stands for innovation and progress. Their sound is in a league of its own and is considered a style-defining influence for numerous bands in the broad field of "noise" and "rock". "You cannot just listen to Melt-Banana; you must experience Melt-Banana" (John Peel)
Founded in the mid-90s as a classic four-piece line-up, MELT-BANANA are now a duo. However, it would be a big mistake to call the absence of a real drummer or bassist on stage a loss - quite the opposite. The step towards PC and samples was a logical development for MELT-BANANA. The result is impressive: bass and drum sounds are more massive and direct than ever. They proved this on countless tours as well as on the 2013 album "Fetch", which is a kind of post-Fukushima album for Yako and Ichiro Agata. Recording began in January 2011 and was completed long after the nuclear disaster in March 2011.
Full of playful sounds, uncharacteristically colorful pop melodies, clever loops and striking effects. The first edition sold out immediately and the reviews were effusive: Rolling Stone, SPIN and Louder Than War celebrated it as "the best album ever", "the best album by one of the best live bands in the world". Metalblast wrote: "Welcome back Melt-Banana, we love U", SPIN named it "Album of the Week".
In 2024, MELT-BANANA released their new album "3+5". The eighth studio album builds on Fetch and takes its ideas further. It retains the band's aggressive, violent pop aesthetic, combines it with playful musicality and once again demonstrates their drive to open new doors. MELT-BANANA do not hold back in any way - on the contrary: their tireless will to evolve is impressive. After touring the UK and the USA with numerous sold-out shows, MELT-BANANA will return to Europe in 2026.
