In this new production by Claus Guth, one of Europe's leading opera directors, Strauss' biblical story of Salome is given a psychologically sensitive touch, rich in symbolism and subtle nuances. The focus is on soprano Elza van den Heever in the role of the disturbed anti-heroine who demands the head of Jochanaan, sung by audience favorite Peter Mattei.
