Play by Paul Brodowsky

+ + + Northern right whale saves Berlin student from drowning + + +

The whale Ambra rescues the student Lou from a Norwegian fjord. Months later, they meet again in a canal. Lou decides to help Ambra return to the sea. Their journey together takes them through all sorts of places, family conflicts, and traumas that inevitably bind the two species together.

+ + + Mysterious Form of Communication Discovered Between Stones, Rats, and Extinct Trees + + +

On Rapa Nui (Easter Island), researchers are gaining insights into a previously unknown form of communication: According to the latest findings, a Pacific rat, a moai statue, and the myth of the last tree are weaving a counter-narrative to the island’s history of colonization and collapse.

+ + + Starting in the summer of 2027: Autonomous driving on the Fulda + + +

Two melancholic little cars chat about their drivers’ obsessions. Strangely enough, each mobile sofa set seats only 1.3 people. When will they finally learn to swim to get fit for the future?

Progress and greed—the logic of the frenzied accumulation of wealth—become an intoxication that drives entire species to the brink of extinction. Ambra’s account confronts Lou with her family history, which is closely tied to whaling. Three (former) ways of life on Easter Island reveal the history of a pre-capitalist and sustainable society, while souped-up cars yearn for a different future.

Paul Brodowsky’s new play weaves three narrative strands into a polyphonic theatrical essay and reflects on the fact that climate-just storytelling requires different forms of narration. Gloomy, funny, and grotesque,*Swimming with Cars* explores how life on a damaged planet can be shaped—and raises the question of whether a different way of living together is possible.

With this world premiere, theater maker and visual artist Sara Dec makes her directorial debut in Kassel.
