In the organizer's words:
Play by Heinz Helle
Understand me, be grateful to me, praise me, love me. And please do it in a way that makes me believe you. Otherwise, I can’t guarantee anything. Otherwise, I’m afraid I can’t rule out deaths resulting from violent outbursts either …
With this secret, usually unspoken “instruction manual” for the average male ego, author Heinz Helle begins a critical examination of images of masculinity in*Prisma Bros*—ranging from the narcissistic power-hungry politician to the overwhelmed stay-at-home dad.
The voices of white, middle-aged cis men are juxtaposed with those of their boyhood friends from the days when they were growing up together:
What kind of men have we become? And who do we actually want to be—what do we need to change about ourselves? The camouflage vests are cast aside. Sharp, honest, analytical, and poetic all at once—and above all, with plenty of humor—Helle unfolds scenarios in which the male self-image is grappled with amid care work, overwhelming demands, fears, fantasies of escape, societal expectations, and sociopolitical developments.
The text jumps back and forth between the past and the present: the boys find a sense of connection—with themselves, the world, their bodies, and others—while skating together in silence. Now, among adults, this connection emerges through the exchange of earnest thoughts. And in language itself: as a beat, but also as a force capable of shaping our consciousness.
*Prisma Bros*is Heinz Helle’s first play and will have its world premiere in Kassel, directed by Anna Grude.
