Mobilität im Wandel - Spielzeug dokumentiert 140 Jahre Verkehrsgeschichte

From July 4 to August 30, 2026, the special exhibition “Mobility in Transition” will be on display at the Petersberg Museum. Even though many people initially considered the first “motorized carriages” to be nothing more than a passing fad, the automobile’s triumphant advance has continued unabated to this day. A wealth of historical toys—from tin cars, gas stations, and board games to trains and airplanes—charmingly illustrates how the image of road traffic has changed alongside the technical evolution of vehicles. However, toys did not merely imitate reality; they also anticipated future developments. As early as the 1960s, both electric cars and programmable autonomous vehicles were already zipping through children’s rooms. Also on display: a massive 1:6 scale model of the time-traveling DeLorean from the cult classic “Back to the Future.” Beyond all this, many visitors will surely rediscover one or two toys from their childhood and revel in their fondest childhood memories.
