- Migrant Audiovisual Memory -

This documentary by Colectivo COPAL from Costa Rica follows twelve Nicaraguan musicians in exile. It tells the story of a life caught between loss and new beginnings and shows how music, art, and shared memory foster hope, create a sense of belonging, and make resistance possible.

The film is set against the backdrop of the political crisis in Nicaragua, which began in 2018 with massive protests and state repression. Since then, many people—including numerous artists and cultural workers—have been forced into exile.

In Costa Rica, they have found new forms of solidarity, creative expression, and political articulation. The film highlights how exile can be characterized not only by uprooting but also by community, solidarity, and creative power.

The film is in Spanish with English subtitles. The discussion following the screening will be simultaneously translated from Spanish to German.

In the discussion following the screening, Dr. Antonio Monte Casablanca, a historian and member of COPAL, will speak with Hannah Müssemann about the making of the film and the album, as well as the role of art and music in exile. The discussion will focus on questions of memory, resistance, democracy, and human rights.

Hannah Müssemann is a research associate at the Institute for Latin American Studies at Freie Universität. Her research focuses on the interplay between audiovisual media and the culture of memory.
