A rain-soaked underpass, a subway station, the back seat of a ship, a view into a reception hall: unattractive scenes, places of passage, the opposite of so-called "sights" are the settings for Angela Böhan's works. They show urban realities and are at the same time the opposite of documentary photography. The unadorned floors, walls and stairs become ideal projection surfaces precisely because they do not claim attention for themselves.
Some of the pictures are so abstract that it is impossible to draw any conclusions as to where exactly they were taken. (Seemingly) random locations are placed in the picture in a planned manner, carefully sought out sections draw the viewer into the picture composition.
The focus is not so much on the location itself, but on details such as the composition, lines and the magic of light. In Angela Bröhan's work, reflections and shadows become the protagonists of a theater of light.
The connection between architecture and rhythm also plays a role: elements of buildings and found details are repeated in a repeat-like manner through digital montage and condensed into patterns. Striking details are mirrored, doubled and assembled into horizontal friezes. In some cases, light, shadow, diagonals and geometric elements create the illusion of space.
In her works, Angela Bröhan achieves an abstraction that, in its visual curiosity and openness to poetic coincidences, points far beyond the semantics of the objects depicted.
