DUISBURG PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
AXEL KOBER Conductor
CHANTAL JANSEN Voice
The New Year's Concert of the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra is this time an opulent film gala. The orchestra starts the new year with the great melodies from the Hollywood dream factory - roaring, glittering, full of energy! And they are in direct line with the great works of the late Romantic composers: the monumental symphonies of Anton Bruckner and Gustav Mahler were as much the inspiration for the often epic film soundtracks as the refined orchestration skills of a Richard Strauss. Not to mention the leitmotifs of Richard Wagner, which live on in many Hollywood soundtracks with distinctive themes for specific characters, objects or atmospheric situations. Erich Wolfgang Korngold, for example, stands between classical music and film music: In Europe, he celebrated success with his opera "Die tote Stadt" ("The Dead City"); after emigrating to the USA, he became a sought-after Hollywood composer. In 1939 he won one of two Oscars for the music to "Robin Hood - King of the Vagabonds", which he won with his soundtracks. John Williams has won no less than five Oscars, in addition to countless nominations, including for the soundtrack to "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone". Alan Silvestri, on the other hand, is still waiting for his first Oscar, although he did receive a Grammy nomination for his music for one of the "Avengers" films. And what would a film music gala be without what are probably the most famous theme songs in film history, written for: James Bond? In addition to the classic "Diamonds Are Forever", originally sung by the incomparable Shirley Bassey, the program also includes modern Bond songs by superstar Adele and Billi Eilish - sung by the charismatic Chantal Jansen with her expressive voice.
