Nude with Skeleton | Marina Abramović: Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition
In the organizer's words:
Marina Abramović's performance Nude with Skeleton, which was originally performed by Abramović herself in 2002, shows an intimate encounter with death: a naked, heavily breathing body moves the motionless limbs of a skeleton, which nestles against its living counterpart. In the exhibition Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition , the work can be experienced daily (except Tuesdays).
Nude with Skeleton is inspired by a Tibetan Buddhist practice in which monks sleep next to the dead in order to overcome the fear of dying. Such rituals are intended to train the mind to repeatedly visualize its own transience. By making physical contact with a skeleton, the performers follow a similar discipline and openly confront mortality.
