Open Air Video Art & Artist Talk

The young friends of the Berlinische Galerie , “Jung und Artig,” are teaming up with the Berlinische Galerie and Mobile Kino to present a summer open-air evening featuring contemporary video art. The focus is on the new video work “like moths to light” by artist Gala Hernández López. Before the screening, the artist and Anne Bitterwolf, curator of the Berlinische Galerie’s video program, will discuss the work in an artist talk. Starting at 6:30 p.m., DJ Nycky Estrella will be spinning tunes on the museum terrace, accompanied by drinks and an ART BARBECUE by artist Jean-Christophe Massinon. The artist talk begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by the film screening. Free admission; everyone is invited.

The interdisciplinary practice of Gala Hernández López (born 1993 in Murcia, Spain) encompasses film and video works as well as performances, in addition to her academic work. She frequently explores the human self-image in a world shaped by digital technologies. From a critical-feminist perspective, she examines the ideas, desires, and visions of the future that emerge in virtual communities, as well as how new—and often reactionary—technological utopias influence the way we think and feel. Her works are based on intensive research and combine objective, socially critical analyses with poetic, personal, and dreamlike elements.
“like moths to light” (2026, 26 min.) is an essayistic meditation on dreams as the last bastion of inner freedom and on the attempt to measure, decipher, and exploit even the unconscious for economic gain. The starting point is a woman speaking from inside a machine designed to measure her brain activity. From there, the film unfolds a fascinating tapestry of historical dream photographs, an amusement park called Dreamland, current AI experiments in dream decoding, and a startup that aims to deliberately control dreams. In this way, the work traces the history of an age-old human desire: to make the invisible visible and controllable. At the same time, “like moths to light” casts a critical eye on neurocapitalism, which colonizes even sleep and the imagination. The film champions dreaming as a space of resistance against constant productivity, total transparency, and economic exploitation—and asks what remains of our dreams when they become the raw material of a world driven by efficiency.

ART BARBECUE
With the installation ART BARBECUE, the landscape architects at atelier le balto once again celebrate the work “Proposition N°7 pour passer une bonne journée” (2003) by artist Jean-Christophe Massinon (1962–2011). On September 3, starting at 6:30 p.m., they’ll be hosting an event in front of the Berlinische Galerie, featuring grilled sausages and vegetarian options—free of charge and outdoors.
