Ozan Ata Canani

A child prodigy on the bağlama (saz), Ata Canani single-handedly invented Turkish rock'n'roll in the late 1970s, which was sung in German and reflected the discrimination and harsh living conditions of Turkish "guest workers" in socially critical songs. Even by the low standards of German hospitality, they were not treated as "guests" at all, but merely as cheap laborers who were expected to eventually return to their home countries after benefiting from the questionable "advantages" of their host country.

Ata was also a long-standing member of the influential band "Die Kanaken", which included Anadolu rock inventor Cem Karaca, who was living in exile in Cologne at the time.

After years of relative obscurity, Ata was catapulted back into the spotlight of the music-loving public in 2013 when his song "Deutsche Freunde" was one of the standout tracks on Trikont's groundbreaking "Songs of Gastarbeiter" compilation. After a career spanning almost 45 years, Ata's debut album "Warte mein Land, warte" was released in May 2021 on Fun in the Church to critical acclaim.
