Performative artist talk with Atabey Mamasita

In the project 'Piedras Lunares' (Moonstones), which the artist is realizing for Dazwischensein 5, Manuela Illera works very consciously with other artists, designers and members of communities. With Atabey Mamasita, Manuela Illera performatively opens a power space to engage with the history of evangelization past and present and the strategies of resistance and repair that followed.

In this 'power space' they take a careful look at open colonial wounds and possible outcomes for healing and dialog. The Christian orientation of the DG Kunstraum is a conceptual element that contributes to the fact that the setting can be described as a site-specific, decolonial practice.

Manuela Illera (*1988 in Bogotá, Colombia) lives and works in Munich. She studied painting in Buenos Aires and fine arts at the Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Prof. Julian Rosefeldt until 2023. Illera's works are closely interwoven with her feminist practice, which is characterized by the migrant perspective. Her interdisciplinary work deals with time-based media and the combination of sound and performing arts. She deals with themes such as decoloniality, queerness, the body and subversive identities. Illera is co-founder of the band 'Cosmica Bandida', co-director of the decolonial music festival 'La Retornona' in Bogotá and produces the feminist podcast 'Extravagant Mortals'.

Interviewer: Atabey Mamasita (b. Carlos Maria Romero *1979) is an artist and curator with a focus on cultural heritage practices relevant to historically marginalized communities and social cohesion. Among other things, Atabey Mamasita was co-curator at the Museu de Arte do Rio in Rio de Janeiro and curator of the Contemporary Dance University Festival in Bogotá. Atabey Mamasita is currently curator of Performative Practices at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin.
