Peyvand: From Iran to India

In the organizer's words:

Nilanjan Dutta - Tabla

Sebastian Dreyer - sitar

Yaser Bayat - composition, multi-instrumentalist

The project Peyvand - a Persian word for connection - sees itself as a space for musical dialog between artists from different geographical and cultural backgrounds. Initiated by Yaser Bayat in collaboration with the PANDA platforma, Peyvand is an open, constantly evolving process in which new sounds and cultural connections emerge from encounters.

Nilanjan is a tabla player of the Farukhabad Gharana and lives in Berlin. He began playing at the age of six under the guidance of his father and later performed as a child artist for All India Radio. He deepened his training with Shri Kamal Chakraborty and Pandit Ravindra Yavagal; he also holds a Sangeet Visharad degree from the Prayag Sangeet Samiti. Whether as a soloist or in sangat accompaniment, his playing combines technical precision with the emotional expressiveness of Hindustani classical music. Concerts have taken him to the Indian Embassy in Berlin and to concert series in Bangalore and Dharwad.

Sebastian Dreyer is one of the few European musicians who dedicate themselves to Indian raga music in its traditional form. His interpretations are narrative and take the audience on long journeys of sound. He learned to play the sitar in Berlin, Jaipur and Kolkata - initially with Gisela Tarwitt, and since 2003 with Partha Chatterjee, a student of Nikhil Banerjee and Ali Akbar Khan. Dreyer has developed his own style from these influences, combining the possibilities of the instrument with the expressive means of Indian classical singing. He performs regularly in Germany and also in India, Russia, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Poland, Switzerland, Austria and Indonesia.

Yaser Bayat is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and former lecturer at the University of Tehran. He teaches at various music schools in Berlin and collaborates with artists from different cultures. His projects place Iranian instruments in an international context and reinterpret them.
