Eerie, mystical, ghostly: The 5th Chamber Concert transports listeners into the world of the fantastic. The program centers on Ludwig van Beethoven’s famous “Ghost Trio,” whose nickname stems from the eerily floating middle movement and a remark by Beethoven’s student Carl Czerny: “The character of this Largo, to be performed very slowly, is ghostly and eerie, like an apparition from the underworld.” Accompanied by Emánuel Moór’s rarely heard Piano Trio, Op. 81, this program features a true gem of chamber music. Here, Moór combines late-Romantic warmth with an elegance that borders on the Baroque. With his Fantasy Pieces, Op. 88, Robert Schumann created a whole world of colors, moods, and characters. The four miniatures from Schumann’s exceptionally productive “Year of Chamber Music” in 1842 form a sensitive interplay between intimacy, passion, and dance-like lightness.
