With a program centered on Frank Bridge, Josef Suk, Amy Beach, and Dmitri Shostakovich, this concert brings to light true discoveries in chamber music at the threshold between the late Romantic era and modernism.
Frank Bridge’s work fell largely into obscurity after his death. Yet it was he who opened the door to modernism in British music by being one of the first composers in Great Britain to incorporate the influence of Schoenberg and Berg into his works.
The American composer Amy Beach, too, remained in the shadows of music history for a long time despite her extensive body of work. Her Piano Trio, Op. 150, from 1938 marks, on the one hand, the beginning of a distinct American musical language, while at the same time audibly drawing on late Romantic forms of expression.
Shostakovich’s chamber music stands among the most powerful testaments to musical modernism. His Piano Trio No. 2 from 1944, composed in memory of a deceased friend, is among his most harrowing works, bearing the weight of personal grief as well as the tragedy of the late war years.
