Franz Schubert: Mass in E flat major

Francis Poulenc: Gloria

In his six-part 'Gloria', 1959, Francis Poulenc set the text to music with great freshness and liveliness, so that critical voices saw it as bordering on sacrilege. He countered: "When I wrote it, I was thinking of Italian frescoes with angels sticking out their tongues, and also of some solemn-looking Benedictine monks I saw playing soccer one day." His humor and his love of life are revealed at their most beautiful in the Gloria, which is as solemn as it is exuberant.
The 'Mass in E flat major', composed in 1828, the last year of Franz Schubert'slife, is considered to be his most impressive sacred composition.
