The sociologist Andreas Reckwitz describes in his book "Loss. A Basic Problem of Modernity", sociologist Andreas Reckwitz describes the social experience of loss
against the backdrop of modern thinking about progress. In view of the increasing experience of crises and conflicts, the modernist narrative of progress is losing its power. In fact, according to Reckwitz, modernity has always been a "fragile construction" that carries fear within it. This is linked to three scenarios of where the "affinity for loss" can lead, at least one of which seems hopeful.
On this evening, we will discuss the central aspects of Reckwitz's work against the background of our own social experiences of loss.
